Testing time again, at Barcelona. And, ho hum, Seb Vettel was fastest in the latest Red Bull. Second on the first day of the test was Nico Hulkenberg, now in the saddle at Force India, replacing the unfortunate Adrian Sutil. The good news for F1: the Red Bulls and McLarens look evenly matched. McLaren should get two-tenths’ head start just for being the only good-looking cars on the grid. www.formula1.com

Kyle Busch took the honors in the Bud Shootout, just nipping Tony Stewart in one of those contrived green-and-white checker finishes. And Carl Edwards did what every 500 runner wants to do—put his Ford on pole, thus being able to race in the Gatorade Duels rather than try to avoid trouble. www.nascar.com

Money still talks: that’s why Vitaly Petrov is in the Caterham for the 2012 season and Jarno Trulli is staring at retirement. Trulli, of course, is one of the great enigmas of F1: fluid, smooth, super fast in qualifying, but lacking the mental steel to be a consistent front runner. And the Lotus that looked terrific in Jerez is now back in England because of a chassis flaw that has been exposed on Barcelona’s high-g turns. www.formula1.com

NASCARThe latest rules changes have stopped the crazy two-car drafting we saw in 2011, but the three-wide racing in the Bud Shootout showed, yet again, that no matter how you tweak things, restrictor-plate racing remains an accident looking for a place to happen. www.nascar.com
